Shot
options:
You are playing best of five sets on a 14 second indoor green, seven shots to win a set. It's 1-1 in sets and you lead 3-0 in the third. With black shot against, you have one bowl each left to play. You lie second, third and fourth, so what shot would you play and why?
This was the shot faced by Guernset's Anne Simon in her World indoor women's singles clash with the eventual winner, English champion Sandy Hazell.
Soon after she played the shot, I asked the opinions of the three overseas competitors, Alice Duncalf (Canada), Gaynor Reid (New Zealand) and Jess Brennan, who was the first representative from Hong Kong to appear in the championships.
They all told me that they had enjoyed taking part in the event in Guernset, and, like the men playing on the Preston portable for the first time, they would expect to do better next time.
I have a theory that the primary thought on a debut event of this nature it is the desire not to play badly, not least on carpet, where their main previous experience has been on grass - the second time they are better prepared to win in every way.
